Depression is not uncommon when you are fighting chronic pain. As you wander in the darkness, you start to wonder when it will all end. For some, they ask if they should just end it themselves.

Warrior, the answer is certainly no!

When you find yourself circling the pit of despair, you must turn away from your circumstances and seek out the light of hope, whether it is a brief moment in time that you can ignore the shadow behind you.

As Helen Keller once said, “Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow.”

This may seem a naive statement, but it truly is not. If you allow yourself to focus on your pain, you will spiral into a deeper depression than you are currently experiencing. However, you keep seeking for hope, it will give you purpose.

Thich Nhat Hanh stated, “Hope is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear a hardship today.”

Does it take a lot of strength to continue to seek hope?

Absolutely!

You are stronger than you give yourself credit. Not everyone can endure what you are going through and still continue to fight. That takes courage, and you have that in bountiful supply, but only if you keep hoping.

One of my favorite quotes I have used before is by Samuel Smiles, who said, “Hope is like the sun, which, as we journey toward it, casts the shadow of our burden behind us.”

There is a lighthouse sitting on the coast, its radiant beams piercing the shadows of your current situation.
