I have always admired marathon runners. They train day after day, pushing their bodies to the max so that they can achieve the goal of bursting through the finish line at the end of a rigorous trek. They throw their hands in the air and collapse to the ground in total exhaustion and triumph of their nearly impossible feat. I always think to myself, “Now that is true strength.”
No, not strength. Endurance.
For chronic pain warriors, we too run a hard and relentless race. Though we may not be marathon runners, we fight an on going war that wages within ourselves. Even getting out of bed in the morning is a battle we must fight. Our daily life is filled with constantly having to conquer our pain so that we can try to live a “normal” life.
However, what we may not realize is that our pain is actually giving us something many “normal” people do not possess. True Endurance.
Our constant struggle with pain has given us the ability to overcome many an obstacle that blocks our path. The key is opening our eyes to this fact. We may not be able to run marathons or lift up a school bus with one hand, but we can endure through hardships and pain that most people would quake under.
Today, remember that under that pain-riddled flesh and blood is an inner superhero that is daily striving to endure. It was Buddha that once said,
“Endurance is one of the most difficult disciplines, but it is to the one who endures that the final victory comes.”
