“One ought never to turn one’s back on a threatened danger and try to run away from it. If you do that, you will double the danger. But if you meet it promptly and without flinching, you will reduce the danger by half. Never run away from anything. Never!” -Winston Churchill

As a kid, I loved to watch the old Looney Toons cartoons whenever I was at my
grandparents’ house. I would spend at least an hour rolling with laughter, especially during the episodes that involved my favorite characters in the entire show, The Roadrunner and Wile E Coyote. At times, I would feel sorry for the poor coyote because, no matter what he would do, he could never catch that slippery bird. The best parts, however, came when Wile E would finally seem to catch up to the Roadrunner, but not before running off the side of10152012_wileecoyote1_article a cliff. He would stop in mid-run, look down at the valley below, turn to the camera with this “Ah, nuts” look in his face, and then proceed to fall a thousand feet down with the cliche “bomb” sound until he finally landed with a loud thud, a cloud of dust rising into the air.

On this journey through life, there are many dangers we continually face, from taking the easy path to encountering fierce beasts that block our path. Some of these hazards creep up on us without warning, but many can be avoided, if you know what they are and how to avoid them.

This month, we will be exploring some of these threats, so that you can have a better idea of what to look out for. Though I, myself, have not experienced many of these dangers, I want to share the knowledge of those who have gone before me and have the scars and maps to prove it.
